This is a novella that was short-listed for the Booker Prize. It's the story of Bill Furlong, who owns a business that sells coal in his small Irish town. It is coming on Christmas, and Bill thinks back on his life and how during unfortunate circumstances, a kindly woman looked after both he and his mother when he was first born. Bill delivers coal to a convent, where he discovers a tragic situation. Bill struggles with doing what is right and knowing that his life will become more difficult for him and his family as a result of this choice.

This is a timely story that involves a moral dilemma that makes the reader look within and ask what would we do in a similar situation? What small things can we do to make a difference. It is also a commentary on sins committed in the name of organized religion.

This is a very short but though provoking novella that will leave you with some very good questions to answer.
