Lessons in Chemistry is a Timely Read

It is the 1960's in California. Women are expected to be the dutiful housewife, taking care of the home. But not Elizabeth Zott. She is a chemist, and she enjoys doing her research. Throughout her life, she has had to overcome many obstacles that the male species have thrown at her. She finds herself working in a lab at Hastings Institute, where she meets and falls in love with world-renowned chemist Calvin Evans. He is a man that believes in her. They soon fall in love, and life takes a different route for both of them.

When the unthinkable happens, Elizabeth finds herself working on a TV cooking show in the afternoon. She shows women how to prepare food for their families and teaches them how chemical science plays a role in cooking. She enlightens and exposes women to science and encourages them to rise above their lot to realize their own aspirations.

Bonnie Garmus has created a funny, warm book with a timely message. In the beginning, I found myself thinking that Elizabeth and Calvin's relationship was not unlike Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farah Fowler. They were two quirky but genuinely likeable characters who fell in love. But it is Elizabeth's strength and resilience that will have you cheering for the amazing Elizabeth Zott! Put this book on your summer reading list. You will not be disappointed.
