American Dirt

By: Jeanine Cummins

This book grips you right from the first chapter and takes you on a scary, heart breaking, captivating journey. The book begins in Acapulco, Mexico. We discover the main character, Lydia lives with her jouranlist husband and young, gifted son Luca. Their charmed life in Acapulco is slowly being infiltrated by the drug cartels and the violence is escalating.

Lydia owns and operates a bookstore. Her love of literature draws her to a man who enters her store and purchases some of her very favourite books. They strike up a friendship and soon Lydia finds herself drawn to this enigmatic and charming man. What she doesn't realize is that he is the head of the local drug cartel.

At the Quinceanera for her niece, violence erupts and Lydia is forced to quickly make some heartbreaking choices. What follows is a story that is timely. It will both captivate and horrify you. You will witness the sacrifices many immigrant parents make to give their children a better life and the value of hope.

This book is on Oprah's Book Club for a good reason. it is well written, with a timely storyline. It is destined to be one of the best of 2020!
