A Nice Place to Die

By: Joyce Woollcott (RWA-Daphne DuMaurier Award-Winning Author)

I was delighted to read Joyce's inaugural crime fiction novel-A Nice Place to Die. It features the main character, Detective Constable Ryan McBride- a thoughtful, dedicated officer of the Belfast Police Department and a group of his police colleagues. These characters often reminded me of many figures from Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch novels. Some of the characters were straight-laced, and some of them provided comic relief.

The opening chapter reveals a woman's body has been discovered in a wooded forest. DC McBride is called in to investigate this grizzly homicide. But when he encounters the body, he recognizes the young woman. In fact, he had dated her!

The Police department is also trying to find a serial rapist who drugs women's drinks in bars, follows and rapes them. McBride's personal life is a bit of a mess. He is trying to juggle a relationship with a witness and a bitter ex-wife. At work, there are conflicts involving colleagues who have joined the precinct from another detachment. Something seems to be a little off with the new crew. How will all these scenarios be resolved?

Joyce Woollcott has written a well-thought-out police investigative crime novel. Her descriptions of the setting give you a good sense of the place. She has balanced the personal and professional elements of the case for the reader to get an impression of the main character of McBride. The characters are believable, and the storyline hooks you. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you are sent on a new trajectory.

I look forward to reading more of her books and following this series! Congratulations, Joyce Woollcott! Well done!
